Despite their adventures in Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant failed to recognise Renee Zellweger.

Possibly due to having some work done, which she denied, Hugh didn't recognise the actress while playing co-star identification game on Watch What Happens Live.

Hugh was asked a series of questions about six of his famous female co-stars with their faces partly obscured.

"Who is the one second from the right, because I've never seen her before in my life?" Hugh was then told who it was an he replied: 'Oh Renée!'

He made a few digs at Sarah Jessica Parker, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, and Julianne Moore before saying, "They all hate me, I think."

And it's not just female co-stars he's been endearing himself with.

When asked if he had to be a hopeless romantic to play his roles, Hugh replied: "Well I'm not, I'm quite the reverse. I'm a nasty piece of work, an ego maniac. That was all fake from my point of view."

Hugh also raised eyebrows when he declared that couples should have affairs to keep their marriages working.

The actor has famously never married despite having a string of long term relationships – including 13 years with actress Elizabeth Hurley and three with heiress Jemima Khan - and fathered four children with two women.

Hugh said: "I can see the lovely aspect if you marry exactly the right person, your best friend and it's cosy and it's lovely.

"But people make so many mistakes. Do I think human beings are meant to be in 40-year-long monogamous, faithful, relationships? No, No, No. Whoever said they were? Only the bible or something. No one ever said that was a good idea. I think there's something unromantic about marriage. You're closing yourself off.

"I always admire the French and the Italians who are very devoted to their marriages.

"They take them extremely seriously, but it is understood that there might be other visitors at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. You just never boast about it. They never say anything, but that's what keeps marriages together."
