Sherlock fans will already be champing at the bit, with the season four premiere set to air on New Year day.

But now there's even more for fans of the BBC drama to get their teeth into, with a new trailer released to give us a few more clues on what to expect from the feature-length episodes to come. In the dark and moody video, we hear a troubled Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch , being told: "The roads we walk have demons beneath, and yours have been waiting for a very long time". We then see a burning house, as the text flashes onto the screen: "It's not a game any more". Further disturbing images of a prostrate Sherlock in a dingy cell-like room, ill boding images of sharks in an aquarium and Watson at the bottom of what looks like a deep and dank well, up to his knees in water. We also see dastardly flashes of Holmes' new nemesis Culverton Smith, played by Toby Jones, who the show’s writer and producer has described as "the most evil villain we've ever had." He poses the question: "What's the very worst thing you can do to your best friends?" before answering himself, "Tell them your darkest secrets". The trailer finishes on a close up of Sherlock himself, telling someone: "I love you". With dark secrets set to be revealed, it looks like the new season of Arthur Conan Doyle 's best loved creation will definitely not disappoint. The new series of Sherlock premieres on BBC 1 on New Year’s Day at 9pm.
