The surprise new romance between Selena Gomez and The Weeknd coincidentally came just before the release of his track name-checking the singer.

And Selena's ex Justin Bieber, 22, reportedly believes this well-timed fling is all a ruse to promote the pair's new music together.

According to TMZ, the Sorry hitmaker - who dated Selena on and off between 2011 and 2015 - has dismissed the relationship as tactical on the brunette's part.

It's said that Justin believes this is all 'cookie-cutter stuff' for her - Selena has been linked to previous collaborators including Nick Jonas, Zedd and, of course, Bieber himself.

Selena and The Weeknd certainly haven't been trying to hide the romance so far; they went for dinner in LA and packed on the PDA while the singer was seen playing the song in question - Party Monster - while being photographed in LA.

Justin isn't the only one fazed by the supposed relationship - The Weeknd's ex Bella Hadid swiftly deleted Selena on social media as the photos were published.

Selena seemed unmoved by the criticism from Bella's online fans, posing for a racy snap by fashion photographer Mert Alas which prompted a barrage of abuse.

Her posts last week were being littered with cruel comments from trolls, calling her a 'snake' and a 'traitor'.

One fan wrote: 'You talk about awareness before but wat is this wt The Weekend? Its shocking but Anyway if your happy dats ok i guess... (sic)'

Other, more cruel commentators called her a 'b*tch' and a 'Fame wh*re' for hooking up with Bella's ex-boyfriend, real name - real name Abel Tesfaye.

And, in defense of Selena's friend Bella, another wrote: 'BELLA is better,' and one other warned: 'Leave Abel alone he wants Bella hadid'

Referencing the first paparazzi pictures of Selena and The Weeknd, another added: 'She looks so clingy to the weeknd lmao! That wont last' while many littered her posts with snake emojis.

However, Selena is said to believe that she hasn't broken any 'girl code' - because she and Bella were never anything more than casual aquantances.

On Wednesday night, photographer teasingly tagged The Weeknd in his photo post and captioned it with a love heart emoji, suggesting feelings between the two singers are running deep.
