In Olivia Wilde’s world, mirroring the climate has nothing to do with the weather.

While for many, May flowers and strategically lightened-up hair are the status quo of the long awaited spring season, Wilde’s new look channels a more subversive message. The actress shared her makeover on Instagram along with the caption, “Dark times call for dark hair. #1984play,” alluding to her forthcoming Broadway debut, a stage version of George Orwell’s dystopian novel—published in 1949—which found its way on to Amazon’s best-seller list earlier this year.

Wilde’s new color—a bold departure from her recent platinum blonde—was accompanied by a slightly shortened chop, the bob inching up to stop severely at chin level, its moody hue playing well with the clean and radiant skin that is fast becoming her signature. Though the shade is likely a facet of Wilde’s character, Julia, it seems a fitting shift for the actress, who has been vocal about women’s rights and the eerily Orwellian realities of politics in 2017, communicating her opinions with well-placed frames on Instagram. But whether she’s fleeing Big Brother or coyly hailing a cab, the raven mane is a prime example of the novel’s concept of doublethink: When the days get sunnier, there’s nothing quite like embracing the dark side.
